Hobby Lobby

Many have heard of the major chain arts and crafts store known as Hobby Lobby, but something that is one of the company’s most important characteristic is its Christian beliefs and values that are held at the core of the business. Hobby Lobby is actively disproving the misconception that a company can not be serving God’s kingdom and be financially successful at the same time, currently standing as the largest privately owned arts and craft store in the entire world. They also currently have store locations in 48 states and have more than 1,000 stores across the world. Being founded in the 70s in Oklahoma, the company has stood firm in its values and has not conformed to the world. A situation in which the company stayed rooted in its values is the famous case of Burwell VS Hobby Lobby, where the company disagreed with the required provision of birth control to employees as healthcare. The world was moving in a direction that did not align with the company’s morals that were at the center of their belief system, so instead of bending to what they did not believe in, they stood up for what they thought to be right. The website of Hobby Lobby also states the company’s beliefs, stating in their “our story” section that they are committed to “Honoring the Lord in all we do by operating the company in a manner consistent with Biblical principles.” This shows that they are not just talking about being Christians, but they are acting and letting it control the ways that they do business daily and as a whole. Hobby Lobby continues to serve as a good example of a redemptively minded company by being innovative and going against the flow of the world while following God’s commandments and serving his people.

I never knew that Hobby Lobby was the largest privately owned arts and crafts store in the world, and it is really nice how they also keep their Christian beliefs as the foundation of their business. I also think it’s great how Hobby Lobby hasn’t conformed to the patterns of this world and stands true to what they believe.

I have known that Hobby Lobby was a Christian company, but not to the extent of a court case. It is neat to see that and compare it to how Grove City stayed true to its values. It is an important part of owning and running any redemptive business.

I love this story! It is so important to have examples of successful businesses that honor God in the way they lead.
