Hobby Lobby — Reimagining Room Restoration
Only two U.S. states do not house a Hobby Lobby store. Given that this enterprise began by a couple taking a $600 loan in 1970, the 1,000+ stores and ~50,000 employees is a remarkable tale! The home decor market barely seemed profitable unless one came at it from a hardware or repair perspective for years, but Hobby Lobby and other companies demonstrated (at least Americans, if not other) people have grown in their passion for beauty within their households. The mission of Hobby Lobby is to “Honor the Lord in all we do by operating the company in a manner consistent with Biblical principles” among other values and principles.
Even Hobby Lobbys in other countries such as Hong Kong, Shenzhen, China and Vietnam do not open on Sundays, demonstrating the Biblical value of rest. Their Christian virtues extend beyond puzzling business choices and missing out on market-time. The company highlights other companies and even “Donations and Ministries” in their “About Us” on their website, showing the communal nature of their endeavors. The products they sell also feed into this ideal. Why do you decorate you home? Is it not to please others and/or express your interests? Oftentimes in America, home decor serves as conversation platforms. “Where did you get that?” or “What a beautiful home you have!” frequently begin dialogue when visiting homes. Hobby Lobby takes this idea and caters a redemptive business model with a relevant set of products to the world.
Wow, that’s a cool story of how Hobby Lobby started out and how they continue to honor the Lord even after all these years. I never knew that Hobby Lobbys in other countries closed on Sundays. It is really awesome how Hobby Lobby is taking on a redemptive business model.
