Vocation is often seen as a big, singular calling. But it is also in everyday small acts of obedience, right where we are. In my Christian Civilization class, we have been exploring the idea of vocation, going beyond pastors or missions. The idea is that vocation is in all that we do and how each of us can join God in the work he is doing in the world right now. There is an implication that” 1) work takes away from ministry and 2) business can either serve society or make money, but not both.” This is simply not true, and we know this because of redemptive entrepreneurship. In our Christ Civ reading, Planninga talks about “faithfulness here and now”; this is a reminder that God calls us not just for a big future moment, but the small responsibilities of today. God calls us to be faithful in our sub vocations- the roles we play as students, leaders, coworkers, creators.
So, in all that you do, whether that be a startup, designing a product, or managing a team, you are answering a part of your calling. Every aspect of your gifts and ideas cannot be separated from God, as they were given to us by God. These are tools to reflect His goodness in the marketplace.
No matter where God is calling us, we must not forget the simple acts he calls us to e.g. diligence, kindness, etc. We need to bring ethical decisions to our workplace, serving others, or whatever it might be, your work matters. Faithfulness is the now, and God works through every aspect of us.
Matthew 28:19- “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
