Neil Clark Warren – eHarmony

Neil Clark Warren is the ninety-one-year-old founder of the dating platform eHarmony. Born on September 18th, 1934, Neil was raised on a family farm in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1956, He achieved his bachelor’s degree in social science from Pepperdine University. He then went on to earn his Master’s of Divinity from Princeton Theological School, and his PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Chicago. After Neil completed his education, He went on to be a professor and dean at Fuller Theological Seminary’s Graduate School of Theology, where he counseled many dating and married couples. His decades of counseling experience led him to write numerous books about his observations of relationships and conflicts. In 1995, Neil and his son-in-law worked to teach Neil’s findings in seminars.

In 2000, Neil launched eHarmony, an online dating service that matches people based on their compatibility. Users would start by completing a questionnaire to determine their values and priorities in a romantic partner. This test evaluated their personality types and values to match as effectively as possible. Then, couples would be matched together and encouraged to chat and meet up. eHarmony took off, and to date, has resulted in 4% of United States marriages. Couples who meet on eHarmony also report fewer divorces than the national average. Success reports suggest that 70-80% of matches result in long-term dating or marriage relationships.

Neil used his Christian beliefs and education to help build a platform to create lasting, valuable relationships. In its early stages, He marketed this platform to Christian singles looking for spouses.  He continued to incorporate his beliefs even after the founding of the company, limiting the platform to heterosexual relationships and encouraging future-oriented dating to promote marriage. The questions used to form matches involved spiritual and religious elements, encouraging users to focus on the big, important questions. Neil’s faith and beliefs allowed him to create a redemptive platform, helping tens of thousands find their forever partner.
