The church and the culture

When I started to think about this topic, I was super excited that this was what we were prompted to write about. In one of my previous posts, I talked about Freedom Biker Church, and I think it is a relevant topic based on church culture. For myself, when I think of church, I think of a big building or a small one where a group of people come together with a common goal, and that is to hear the Word of God from what we call a pastor, as well as to worship, because it says in God’s Word that if you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that He is Lord, you will be saved. So that is what I think of when I think of church.

But let’s talk about culture for a second, because I think this is where we, as a society, can sometimes rub each other the wrong way. Culture, in my mind, includes many different things. It is hard to find two churches with the exact same culture. Like we see above with Freedom Biker Church, the church itself, I think in most scenarios—though not all—acknowledges that there is one goal for a church, and that is to glorify God. However, I believe that while there are ways the Lord has commanded us to pray, worship, and live, we can still bring the message to people in ways that relate to them.

When I started reading about this particular church, one of the reasons they decided to start it was because they felt that bikers did not feel welcome in traditional churches. So they brought the love of the Gospel to them in a way that made them feel welcomed and wanted. I think, as a world, we need to continue finding every way we can to bring people to Christ, and this is exactly what churches like these are doing.

  • Culture is indeed an important aspect that often goes overlooked when it comes to the church. I appreciate how you are able to discuss the two and how they relate. The example of the Freedom Biker Church is a great one, showing how this church is able to reach a culture that is not often reached by traditional church settings like the ones you mentioned.

  • The connection between culture and the Church is not just one that is often overlooked, but is actually an important part of it. The word "Cult' originally was used to refer to any religious system whether they were considered truthful or not. And the word "Culture" is derived from that. The connections of these words illustrates the natural connection between the culture and religion, and Churches would be wise to recognize it.
