At first glance, business and ministry might be an unlikely pair. However, the concepts of entrepreneurship and the Church have a lot more interaction than initially thought. Every major ministry that we can think of (Focus on the Family, Young Life, Samaritan’s purse etc.) has a business attached to it. Even missionaries have to have an understanding of business to be able to support themselves and their mission.

We talked in class about how business is a cultural language that crosses borders and barriers. This fact alone is a great tool when it comes to spreading the Word to different people in different places. A lot of things fall under the umbrella category of business. Some being financial skills, management skills, communication between clients and partners, marketing, and so much more. The Church and Christian Ministries need those aspects in order to run.

Even in a ministry you need to know how to accurately reach your audience. Whether you are running a Church or a ministry you need to understand who you are speaking/reaching out to. Once you know who you are reaching out to then you can accurately innovate in your business. Ministry is so important in the Church and spreading the word of the Lord, but reaching to people that might come from different backgrounds can be difficult at times. So I think people running ministries and churches can take skills from business to be able to learn about their audience.

As Entrepreneurs who are wanting to be involved in the Mission of the Church we need to not only know the Word of the Lord, but we also need to be well versed in the area of business so our ministry can flourish in today’s society. As a double major in Biblical and Religious Studies and Entrepreneurship, I choose these two majors for a specific reason. I wanted to be prepared so when the Lord decided to take me into missions and ministry I can have the relationship + knowledge of Jesus, but also have the practical tools handy to be able to run a ministry or be working in the mission field.
