Over the past week, many of the Grove City College students went home for Easter Break to be with family, others decided that they would go on a long overdue vacation with friends, and a few of us had to stay on campus because of the unique circumstances that have occurred over the past year or so. As many know, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all of college sports got pushed to the spring semester. This forced many of the athletes to stay on campus away from family. Athletes had practice, games, film, and team activities throughout the week but was still less than ideal when balancing the choice of sports and family. This was the first year to my knowledge that I have ever been away from family during this time of year.

Despite the campus being very quite, there were quite a few benefits. There was hardly ever a line at Hicks, it was very quite in the SAC so work could be done easily, and if you were fortunate enough to have little to no work, you could hang out with friends and just relax. As Good Friday approached, men’s and women’s soccer did a Seder Dinner on Thursday in order to focus our minds on the meaning of this time of year. On Good Friday, many individuals tried to attend some form of church service weather that be online or in person. I cannot attest to what everyone did on Saturday, but men’s soccer had practice and then had the rest of the day off. Finally, Resurrection Sunday came.

For the individuals left on campus there was a beautiful sunrise service that was held on the soccer field. Led by some of the team chaplains and staff here on campus, there was a 30-45 minute service with songs, a message, scripture reading, and prayer. It was a wonderful experience to take part in and was much appreciated to have a service to which we could attend while still on campus. This was a wonderful way to adapt to our current situation. God willing there will not be another pandemic in our lifetime, but maybe there will be another chance to do something of this manner. While the experience was not ideal, it is one I will remember forever and would not trade for the world. Happy Easter everyone: He is Risen!

  • I'm glad that the students who stayed on campus were able to still celebrate Easter! It can be rough to spend the holiday away from your family and friends, but it sounds like you all made the most of it. The sunrise service sounds absolutely wonderful, as does the lack of line at Hicks. Thanks for sharing this experience with us!

  • That sounds so wonderful! I'm glad you were still able to have a good break and happy Easter even though you were away from you family. I wish I could wake up early enough for a sunrise service! Thanks for sharing!
