Cafe Momentum

Located in Dallas, Texas, this nonprofit restaurant is not only known for its high-quality dining experience, but it is also known for its redemptive mission to help transform the lives of justice-involved youth. It is able to combine the functionality of a restaurant while simultaneously having a deep commitment to mentorship and personal growth.

At its root Cafe Momentum is meant to serve a population that is often overlooked. These youth are coming out of the juvenile justice system just to face so many overwhelming barriers. These difficulties can include limited job opportunities, unstable home environments, and a lack of consistent support. Without any intervention, these youth often return to the same cycles that had them sent into the system to begin with. Cafe Momentum saw that there was a gap that needed to be filled to support these youth. Momentum knew that they needed to not only offer a job opportunity but also provide mentorship and restoration.

Cafe Momentum is very unique because of its intentional structure. The restaurant is a fully functional high-end dining establishment, but the staff is made up of interns. These interns are the young men and women who have recently been involved in the justice system. They provide a 12-month program for the interns to rotate through every position in the restaurant. They are then able to learn valuable job experience, but also be filled with confidence, discipline, and a sense of purpose.

The leadership behind Momentum has a significant impact on the success and impact on many people’s lives. Founder Chad Houser envisioned a place where business could be a place of transformation. Rather than separating profit and purpose, he was able to integrate the two. Momentum doesn’t just simply provide short-term relief, but it walks alongside the individuals to help shape and rebuild their lives.
