Ken Block 1967-2023 – 43 Institute
Ken Block was one of those rare people who turned pure passion into a whole new lane in car culture. He was a professional rally driver creative mastermind and the face of the viral Gymkhana videos that blew up on the internet and made drifting rally style driving and wild builds part of everyday car talk. Between co founding DC Shoes and later launching Hoonigan he helped shape the look sound and feel of modern action sports and motorsports.
But one of the coolest parts of his story is what grew out of that success the 43 Institute sometimes called the Ken Block Foundation. This foundation exists to carry on his heart for opening doors for people who are crazy driven but maybe do not have the right connections or support system. Their focus is on what they call motivated misfits the kids and young adults who dream about action sports motorsports or creative work but are not sure how to break in.
The 43 Institute does that in a few practical ways. It works to create real paths of opportunity through mentorship skill building and access to people and places that are usually hard to reach. That can look like connecting a young filmmaker with industry pros helping an up and coming driver find resources or supporting athletes and creatives with training and development so they can turn raw talent into a real career.
They also lean into the health side of things knowing that chasing big dreams is tough on your mind and body. Part of the mission is to support mental and physical wellness so that the people they help are not just talented but also grounded and ready for the long haul. Even charity auctions of Ken gear and iconic parts have been set up to fund this work and keep his legacy of giving opportunities alive for the next wave of builders drivers and creators. In short Ken Block spent his life pushing limits and now the 43 Institute is set up to help others do the same turning his influence on screens and racetracks into real life chances for the next generation.
