TOMS

When it comes to companies that are making an impact, the shoe business TOMS is doing more than most. They utilize the common example of the buy-one-give-one model, where for every pair of shoes that they sell, another pair is donated to someone in need of shoes across the world. Although this is not an explicitly Christian company, they are a good example of social entrepreneurship and are still practicing service to others. TOMS was founded in 2006 by Blake Mycoskie, and the company has donated over one hundred million pairs since its creation. Footwear is something that many take for granted but is a rarity in some parts of the world. Having a clean and new pair of shoes could be life changing for children and adults who need to, for example, walk long distances on dirt roads. TOMS offers many different types and styles of shoes and still provides high quality products for those seeking to purchase comfortable and stylish shoes. In addition to donating shoes, TOMS partners with many nonprofit companies and foundations to increase their impact even further. Most of these groups are focused on youth populations and helping protect and develop children who may be disadvantaged around the world. The company is also mindful in the way that they are producing their products, ensuring that their means are not harming the environment but are being done in a sustainable way. Through the many aspects of this company, it is easy to see the positive societal impact that they are having that makes them a fantastic example of a company that is devoted to social good and human flourishing.

I like the idea of TOMS giving out a free pair of shoes to someone in need around the world. Life can be hard in different countries, but having a pair of shoes that are durable and new can help them out a lot. It’s also really cool how TOMS also partners with nonprofits to continue their mission.

TOMS is a great case study in how a simple business model can scale generosity globally over a hundred million pairs donated is an incredible testament to what buy one give one can achieve. It shows that social entrepreneurship doesn’t have to be complicated to make a real difference in people’s lives.

I love TOMS shoes! The business model is a great idea- I wonder if the founders are believers. My family always bought TOMS shoes growing up. I think they were a little more popular a couple years ago, so I hope they keep innovating so they remain a relevant brand!
