Compassion International
Compassion International is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1952 by Everett Swanson with one goal in mind, and it is this: “to set children free from poverty in Jesus’ name.” So what they do is child sponsorship by allowing people to sponsor kids in places around the world that are less fortunate in their financial situation, but there is a specific thing that stands out to me about who they are and what they do, and it is that they are focused on one child at a time, and this is so important because it is easy, as an organization grows and becomes more popular, to lose your vision and for it to become watered down, but not this organization. They have said we have a goal, and it is to reach children, and how we do that is to be a blessing to one child at a time, and through this vision and mindset, every one child has added up to where they have helped over 2 million kids worldwide. After looking at this organization, I think there is really something that we can take away from it, and it is where is our heart and what are we pursuing. Compassion International knew what their vision was and did not lose that regardless of how many people supported it or how many people volunteered; they stayed true to what they are made for, all for the glory of God. So we should take this and bring it into our own life and never lose sight of our Heavenly Father and keep our eyes fixed on what really matters, and that is advancing the kingdom for the glory of the Lord, just like Compassion International has done by helping less fortunate kids know that regardless of their situation, there is better for them.
I love this mission. Sometimes, the humble approach can be the most effective. It’s encouraging to see an organization that has been around for over 75 years and is still making a difference. I’m sure their model is a big part of their lasting impact.
I think its really cool that instead of creating out of control growth that might mean less impact for individual kids they continue to fix their focus on specific kids. Definitely a great example of sustainable growth and having a priority on individual impact.
The point about staying focused on one child at a time is such a valuable insight it’s what keeps large organizations like Compassion International grounded and truly impactful rather than just operational. Over 2 million kids helped is extraordinary, but it’s the individual stories that make it so meaningful.
