Experience at a megachurch
A couple weeks ago we talked about different types of churches. Professor Sweet had us look up different mega churches. The church my group had looked up was The Pointe in Toccoa Falls, Georgia. The church my group had looked up was The Pointe in Toccoa Falls, Georgia. Me and a few buddies went there during spring break freshman year. We decided to go to a local church on Sunday and we didn’t know where to go so we took a recommendation from one of the locals. The church that they suggested was The Pointe. At first I was a little hesitant because it was the first mega church that I would be going to. I grew up in a small church and I didn’t know what the church was going to be like. We walked into the massive church and all the members were greeting us, we then walked into the so-called sanctuary, but it felt more like walking into a concert. There was a big stage, a lot of lights, big screens up on the wall, it was definitely something I was not used to. I thought the worship was really good and I could definitely feel the Holy Spirit moving throughout the church. But when it came time for the sermon, I was caught a little off guard. The sermon’s main message was about typing and how each person in the church gives 10% to the church. My church at home never really preached upon tithing. I thought the sermon was interesting but then the pastor brought out a family and the husband had said he lost his job and lost his house but when he started giving to the church, he got a new job, found a new house, and ended up having two more kids after that. I thought this was a very interesting way to go about this message and I didn’t quite agree with it. It kind of swayed my opinion on how I view mega churches. But after doing research and in class, my mind has changed. The Pointe has a great message and great values. I believe that if I went back to the church, I would thoroughly enjoy it.
