What a D.light!

What a D.light!

I’m sure as you sit here reading this on either your cell-phone or your computer, the thought of not having electricity at the tip of your fingers is unfathomable. Cofounders Sam Goldman and Ned Tozun of D.light discovered through research that one in three people in the world do not have the opportunity to appreciate reliable electricity on a daily basis. To give more of a perspective, the D.light website says that those one in three people make up more than 2 billion people. What Sam and Ned worked to do was create an affordable solution to the issue, which came in the form of solar-powered lamps and power products.

Though the company is not explicitly Christian, D.light’s mission is to create “Power with a Purpose,” which has made exponential impact. Throughout the course of the past 12 years, D.light has transformed the lives of over 100 million people across 70 different countries.  The impact is simply laid out: “100 million lives empowered; 23 million tons of CO2 offset; and $4.1 billion $ saved in Energy Expenditures.” Not only is D.light working to impact the lives of the poorest people in the world, but D.light is focused on changing the ways we take care of this world as well. From solar home systems to solar lanterns, D.light is on track “to impact 100 million lives before the end of this year” with the help of their largest global network of partners in the industry. They’re surely making change for the better.

  1. I love how D.light has value for humanity and the environment. It is great to see an enormous problem addressed through and innovative organization. Sometimes organizations shoot for goals too small and miss the extraordinary opportunity.

  2. The shocking reality is that this is even just talking about lights, not even something like a cellphone or a computer. We live in a society that does not understand the reality of so much of the world as we sit back and watch movies on our flat screen TVs and stream endless media on our internet. It is so encouraging to see a company step out and help individuals and communities take that first step.

  3. Hearing about companies like this is inspirational. It really makes you feel good about what humanity is doing and how far we have come. It is exciting to think about all the opportunities in third world countries that these redemptive entrepreneurs look to fix.
