The Harbor – Gateway EPC

Gateway is an Evangelical Presbyterian Church that holds its service in Slippery Rock University’s Community Center each Sunday. The church has a very strong focus on College outreach and it is very present in its strong emphasis on hospitality and community gathering. Gateway’s mission is “to strive to be a servant community united with Christ and pursuing redemption in his world.” Whether it be their message on Sundays or their focus on college ministry Gateway does not stray away from sharing Christ as the church is called to in Matthew 28. Pastor Chris loves students and cares deeply about the students at both Slippery Rock and Grove City College. Many families go to this church also, and it is clear that the congregation is a growing one that is thriving as a result of the strong vision of the people and the leaders.

In addition to this, the church has established a strong sense of purpose in reaching those at Slippery Rock University who may be unchurched. Slippery Rock remains one of the biggest party schools in Pennsylvania and this is indicative of the type of people that have chosen to enroll. Students turn to self-gratifying things when they face challenges. Christians have learned to put their hope in Christ, but this is not something that everyone has the privilege of knowing. Gateway understands this truth.

Gateway EPC has founded The Harbor, which is a CCO-affiliated ministry for those who attend Slippery Rock. Their purpose is “to meet weekly on Wednesday nights to study the Bible and spend time together in fellowship. They want to invite people into this community no matter their beliefs.” This was something that I was drawn to in Gateway. A church that was on the move, looking to make old things new and practice loving people intentionally no matter who they are. This is aftercall how Jesus practiced ministry!

  • I think this is an awesome idea and opportunity! As Christians, it can sometimes be daunting to tap into a particular group. When trying to reach such a party driven group of individuals, it can be extremely difficult to try and bring them into a Christian environment. Being able to allow them an open environment that can eventually lead them toward a Christ centered life, is inspiring. I really hope they are able to touch the lives of many individuals that attend Slippery Rock.

  • I loved hearing about this work that Gateway is doing in the midst of the community at Slippery Rock. The minimal interaction I've had with slippery rock students has left me stunned and saddened by the sense of hopelessness and darkness that clings to them. I completely agree that Gateway exudes a warm spirit of hospitality and I'm glad to hear about how they are strategically placing themselves to go after the lost, welcome them in, love them, and build relationships with them!

  • Greg, I like that you were able to incorporate Gateway, a church so close to campus, into your post. One major flaw I find within the modern church is the lack of college outreach, which is something Gateway EPC does really well. Going to Grove City, it is very easy to get lost in the day to day atmosphere of a Christian college, but we often forget about those who are maybe afraid to go to church at Slippery Rock. Gateway is a solid church for those who may feel uncomfortable by the church, and are able to find a home right on their own campus.
