Techless: The Wisephone

Smartphones: The Social Dilemma

While smartphones were invented to improve social connection, they have done just the opposite. Social media has created an endless list of issues for GenZ, or at least heightened those issues to an extreme. All generations are addicted to their phones, but it feels like we could not live without them. Smartphones feel too integral to our lives to dispose of completely.

Techless: Just the Essentials

Techless, started by Chris Kasper and Jon Lentz, was founded to “create pure and simple technology for intentional living.” Their first product wisephone is a touchscreen phone with only the essential tools. These tools include maps, calculator, clock, camera, call, and text. This phone provides people with the ability to relinquish their smartphone and all the addictions that come with it for a wiser option.

Wise Living

Recently, a good friend of mine made the courageous decision to sell his smartphone for a flip phone. Now, this was shocking, but everyone agreed it was wise. With Wisephone, people can follow in my friend’s footsteps without feeling like they are going back in time. People can live simply and in the moment. Distractions will be few and far between. “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding” (Proverbs 4:7).

  • I wonder how much success this business will have in conquering this addiction to technology. I pray that it spreads as I am realizing everyday how much of a distraction social media is and how little of it is actually glorifying to God. It is convicting to read a blog post like this and wonder whether or not I would take this option and surrender my smart phone with all the addicting apps and social media outlets.

  • This is an interesting idea when it comes to a technologically advanced world. I agree that we as a society are addicted to phones and only having the essentials limits distraction and temptations that technology often brings much easy access to. Giving a redemptive spin on the business also creates a better opportunity to promote this idea and provide biblical opportunities to resort to instead of social media and the internet. This may prove to be an excellent way to minister to the unchurched.

  • I love ideas like this, personally, I have always wanted to do this. However, although I do not want to rely on my smartphone I feel that I have too many responsibilities that I use my phone to keep track of to commit to an idea like this. I know friends who have done something similar and it seems like a freeing experience.
