(I bet this list will show up again). Today, I was thinking about the 6th element: people.
People are arguably the most important of the six elements. In class we discussed how the wrong people on a team can tank an organization. There are two main types of people you can have in your organization – those who have compassion or those who are effective. Typically those who have compassion, have little or no business/organizational skill; and those who are effective have that business experience but may lack compassion. The key is finding people who embody both – compassion and effectiveness.
I am a Business Management major with a concentration in Human Resources and minor in Christian Ministries. Right now, I am seeking to go into the field of HR. This can be a scary thing because you never know what you are going to get in HR. HR deals with all of the problems, and many ethical concerns surrounding people. I have seen businesses who have great HR departments and conflict resolution, but I have also seen businesses that let the people tear the business apart.
My dream is to do talent acquisition and organizational development – which is similar to recruiting/onboarding, and studying people and training programs and how to make the two coincide. The person is crucial to any working function, however where there are people there are problems.
Through my experience with the hiring process, if I had to choose, I would rather hire/employ somebody who is compassionate about what the company stands for/does – this individual if they are ready to learn will be able to pick up the business skills needed. Versus the other way around, having an effective business minded person but having to teach them to be compassionate or having concern for others would be much more difficult – and almost like changing a heart tendency.
When considering the people in your organization, know what you value, and who you want representing your company. People are a foundation for your company so be mindful and clear about your vision and mission.
