When it comes to businesses that put an emphasis on redemptive entrepreneurship, Patagonia is one that has a purpose driven mission and aims to make a profit from it.

Patagonia is a company that creates quality outdoor clothing and gear for a wide variety of sports and activities, including snow, surfing, fishing, hiking, and more. Patagonia’s purpose can be traced all the way back to the founder of the company, Yvon Chouinard. Yvon was an environmentalist, rock climber, and certainly an entrepreneur. When he started the company, he had a mission of saving the planet. Patagonia is committed to sustainability and environmental consciousness, and that has driven the company’s innovation, differentiation, and loyalty.

Patagonia as a brand has shown that a business can make a profit while promoting sustainability. The company focuses on selling products that tell a story, rather than just being functional. For example, they sell jackets made from recycled materials and fleece sweaters made from recycled polyester. Patagonia promises customers that they will replace products that come damaged which builds trust between the company and its customers. They also focus on transparency with their supply chain which helps them with their mission of environmental sustainability.

Patagonia has a loyal customer base that translates into repeat customers, referrals, and brand advocacy. The company’s commitment to quality products allows them to price their products higher, at a price that customers are willing to pay for high-quality clothes and gear that will last a long time. Patagonia also focuses on storytelling in their marketing campaigns. They use their ads to reinforce their environmental sustainability goals, rather than flashy ads that might get more viewers, but does not necessarily translate to more buyers.

Even though Patagonia does not specifically have a Christian or missional focus, the company is redemptive in that it focuses on high-quality materials and promotes environmental sustainability. They have established a brand that has encouraged other companies to focus on similar initiatives, and they are a great example of a business that can make a profit while doing good for the earth.

  • This is really interesting! I thought it was cool that the founder was an environmentalist, and saw a need for sustainability. The mindset of Chouinard allows for Patagonia to move past being ethical and to be redemptive.

  • Your thoughts on Patagonia as a redemptive business are so enlightening. Their commitment to being sustainable and transparent can truly go hand in hand. Even without a direct Christian Mission, their model reflects the Christian value of stewardship. What a wonderful example of meaningful impacts being paired with successful companies!
