The church is often plagued by insistent and unhelpful traditions. While tradition is a tool and can provide thoughtful and provoking meaning to worship it can also be a stumbling block. As we, like Paul in Athens, attempt to meet the culture at its touchpoints, it’s important that tradition doesn’t make that more difficult. This kind of forethought requires entrepreneurial pastors and thinking. At its core, entrepreneurial thinking means challenging the usual way of doing things. Instead of blindly following tradition, leaders can look for new ways to engage in their community.

Meeting Evolving Needs

As people’s needs and attentions change having an entrepreneurial mindset can help the church meet those needs. My Mom actually helped start a ministry at my church called Celestial Manna which was able to pivot during covid to provide limited contact food for those in need. I’ve seen similar churches shift their food pantries to be limited contact and more efficient. As church leaders spot new challenges they can use this kind of thinking to come up with creative solutions. Like Celestial Manna, this might not involve new programs , but the repurposing of existing programs. An entrepreneurial mindset helps the church connect better with the community and spread the gospel.
