He Gets Us

During the Super Bowl this year it was hard to miss the He Gets Us ad campaign that appeared twice during the commercial breaks. There has been a good amount of conversation among believers and nonbelievers about these ads.

What is the He Gets Us campaign all about? The He Gets Us website states their “agenda” on the home page of their website. They claim that their agenda “is to rediscover the love story of Jesus. Christians, non-Christians, and everyone in between. All of us.” This is an incredible mission that does not come without challenges and adversity especially in the culture that we live in today.  The He Gets Us website also aims to show the humanity of Jesus to the viewers. The home page of the website gives examples of how Jesus loved people, gave people hope, struggled, sought justice, and mourned. This part of Jesus has been forgotten in our culture today. Most people do not see Jesus as a loving or caring person, just as someone who came to enforce rules. This message is great and definitely one that people need to hear, however, I belief that it run the risk of undercontextualizing Christianity and the message of the gospel. Jesus was fully man and fully God, framing His as only human can create confusion.

The He Gets Us ads are funded by The Servant Foundation. The Servant Foundation is a limited liability company that is a public charity and Christian based foundation in Kansas. Last year that launched a $100 million effort to improve the image of Jesus. They have clearly been able to reach many people through these ads and their playing during the Super Bowl. This organization has great goals and is gaining national attention through their ads and message.
