It is said that deeds of love plus words of love plus adequate time equals servant evangelism. But what is servant evangelism? Servant evangelism is a way often used to guide people to Christ through generous and kind actions. These can range anywhere from free car washes, holiday outreaches, leaf raking, or even toilet cleaning! Servant evangelist activities get people to ask about the event and become curious, leading them to a local church and possibly joining the Christian community. However, churches use other methods to discuss Christ with people, so is it really necessary to go through all the effort for servant evangelism?
Evangelism is a classic way to draw people towards Christ, and many individuals as well as churches engage in evangelism towards others. Churches do outreaches, mission trips, and other public events to draw crowds and “fish” for believers. On a more personal level, pastors and members of the church can host get-togethers and smaller events. These outreaches to the public are all good and encourage the church’s growth, but servant evangelism is slightly different in its meaning.
The point of servant evangelism is that it focuses around a servant-hearted attitude. Simply doing kind things for other people, not to gain anything or earn money, but to build relationships, to be thoughtful, and tell them about the Lord. Since that is the main goal of servant evangelism, it is a key method to be kind to non-believers and form relationships with them. These actions are so personal that they do not require a lot of planning or finances, so anyone can go out and be a servant for God.
Even if you don’t have training in evangelizing, a simple chat over a cup of coffee will to the trick to bring interest about the Christian community. In today’s culture, we really do need servant evangelism to show the love and compassion of Jesus and how we can forward that through our own actions. Let’s continue to be servants for Christ and bring others towards the Lord!
