A lot of young people today want to become “content creators” or “social media influencers.” These terms can encompass lots of different categories, but what does a redemptive content creator or social media influencer look? There is a fantastic opportunity for these influencers to use their platform for redemptive purposes. The status quo of “spreading positivity” and being a good role model shouldn’t cut it anymore. There should be extra steps taken towards fulfilling a mission in these jobs. They have worked hard to achieve their followers and subscribers so why not take this same drive towards a redemptive goal?
One consideration is the content that was developed to position a person as an influencer. I think the best redemptive missions for these influencers will align with their content in some way. An example of alignment that occurs frequently is professional athletes using their social media accounts to draw awareness towards sports charities and organizations. They have a captive audience that is interested in sports and more likely to support a sports charity. Professional athletes are not content creators per say, but they represent the same high level of influence. A channel like Dude Perfect is an example of content creators that could draw attention to a sports charity.
A powerful example is set when influencers engage on a personal level with their redemptive mission. This requires their participation in helping with the organization or people they support. A great example would be a music channel creator playing with underprivileged youth at a music-education program. This shows their followers and subscribers that they really care and hopefully motivates their audience to become involved in some way as well. Personal interaction always has a greater impact than just donations, and a society committed to redemptive purposes is far more successful.
social media is such a powerful thing, and could be really beneficial if it were used in a positive way. I agree with what you said and how changing the mindset of social media, from something that is typically negative to one that could be life giving. If as Christians we use social media as a platform to spread that gospel, it could have a large effect on the culture we live in.
