World Vision is a Christian organization that operates with entrepreneurial practices. It is not uncommon for a non-profit of any sort to to ask for donations, however, World Vision goes about this in a unique sense. They have people sponsor specific children, in which people can actually put a face with the child to which their money is going, and they get details about the child, such as their birthday, their family, they education, and their hobbies. This makes the opportunity to give so much more real to donors, because you can not really feel a connection to giving money and then not knowing exactly where it is going, but with this you can. This has seriously upped the amount of people who give to their organization, because giving starts a relationship between the donor and their child. It is not a write a check and walk away type deal. Donors are able to write letters back and forth with the child they sponsor, even despite language barriers. The letter from a donor gets translated into the language of the child, and their response is translated to the native language of the donor. In addition, while donors pay $35 a month to sponsor a child, they also will often give more throughout the year around holidays. They are inclined to do this because they are connected to the child and can see the direct positive impact their money is having. This would not be the case in traditional charity structures, as they might get a thank you letter, or newsletter from the non-profit as a whole, but they would not get to feel the connection to where their money is actually going. World Vision is also a ministry, in that, it is not just a charity that connects donors with children in need, rather, they also share the gospel with each child and their family in the network, and donors and children can write back and forth about their faith.
