Gen Z: Walking Away from Christ

A couple weeks ago, we looked at statistics analyzing the different generations and how they identified themselves; Christian, Atheist, or otherwise. While all of the other generations seemed to remain relatively stable, with some change hare and there, Gen Z was incredibly atheistic or agnostic, with Christianity brushed to the side.

How did this happen? What events transpired to allow such a change to occur? Was it the fault of the church, or its lack to keep up with the rest of the secularized world?

For one, science has been purported as the only absolute truth that can and ever will exist. If you can’t see, feel, or test it, then it doesn’t exist. While such a concept can coexist with Christianity, many atheists have trumpeted the opposite, saying that there is no way the two can work together; If you worship God, you’re backwards and irrational. Unfortunately, this has become a huge cause for many Gen Z’ers to ignore religion all together, as they see it as useless rules that people subjugate themselves to in order to reach some eternal life. To them, life is all there is and once its over, you’re done.

This has been one of the greatest deceptions ever pulled by Satan. What better way to get people to walk into danger than to convince them that there is no danger?

If Christians wish to combat this, I believe we’ll need to find new ways to integrate science into the sermons we give today, especially to those that are attempting to reach out to younger people. The sooner we’re able to show that science can exist with Christianity, and it in fact proves it, the better. Christians need to be willing to confront atheistic views, not run from them.

  • I think you're right to say that science has become promoted to being the absolute truth. I do like the idea of connecting science and faith and think many Christians try to neglect science rather than see the complements it may hold with our beliefs.
