Treecup is a tea company whose mission is to combat deforestation in Haiti. With every tea bottle purchased, Treecup plants a tree in Haiti. Since 2017, Treecup has planted over 30,000 trees in Haiti. Haiti is the number one impoverished nation in the western hemisphere and is about eighty percent deforested. Treecup is partnered with a non-profit tree-planting organization called Haiti Friends. Their reforestation strategy is to plant trees on farmland. Haiti friends is a timber reintroduction program that has planted over three million trees since it started in 2006. Haiti Friends plants trees in the mountains around the Artibonite Valley. Haiti Friends doesn’t just plant trees and then leave them to die. They train local Haitians about agriculture and tree cultivation and then reintroduces a variety of tree into their farming practices. Haiti Friends does more than just planting trees; they are cultivating community and agricultural education for the future.
Mark Sotomayer founded Treecup in 2017 as a college student. He and his mother started brewing and bottling his grandmother’s Peruvian Chai tea. Mark is passionate about entrepreneurship, the outdoors, and creating quality tea. He has given his life to Jesus and seeks to glorify Him by doing His will here on earth. Mark’s mother, the co-founder of Treecup, grew up in Peru and immigrated here to the U.S. in 1995. She works full-time at a local hospital and helps with Treecup as much as possible. Mark’s mother has also given her life to Christ, and dedicates her time to furthering the kingdom.

I love the sustainability of this concept. Not only is Treecup helping the environment but they are also teaching and discipling farmers as they go. Organizations always flourish when begun and then left in the hands of local people in the area. This preserves the dignity of the people of Haiti while also showing compassion in this partnership.
This is a very creative entrepreneurial and redemptive mission which is encouraging. I love that not only are they selling tea and planting 1,000s and 1,000s of trees, but they are also cultivating relationships which ultimately is so redemptive. I love how they are growing and expanding so that it has growth potential, and they are seeking that.
I really love the way that small businesses and start-ups start out this way and they grow to be able to support something as environmentally impacting as this. I'm very thankful that there are businesses out there like Treecup who make it their goal to make a difference and that the many trees planted in Haiti are amazing. I'm very glad that the founder has a strong biblical foundation so he is able to minister to others through his products and the mission of his redemptive business. This is also a very simple, original idea that is presented in a new way and has created a great avenue of innovation and it helps the people in need.
I think this business is awesome, especially because he used his family's recipes to create a business while in college. He came in and talked to my class last semester and it was interesting to hear all the challenges he faced with this business but all the positives that came from the struggles. I think that planting trees and building relationships with others is really important and gives this business a unique edge.
