New Story: 3D Houses

New Story: 3D Houses

In class, we watched a video from the Company New Story. They are a non-profit company who has many donors through Praxis to help communities fight homelessness. Their website says that they have donors called The Builders who pay for the operational expenses, so they can continue to serve and build houses. What makes them different from other house-building companies is that they are 3D printed homes, which is not as expensive as creating a normal home. Instead, they can create a home in 24 hours and receieve feedback from the new home-owners to improve the others houses they have yet to build. Another interesting aspect with New Story is that they ask before they build homes to hear peoples stories and to make sure that a family’s home to be safe. These houses are 500 square feet, have 2 bed, and 1 bath. These homes are built for people who live off of less than $3 a day.

This redemptive business started when the founder went to Haiti and saw the living conditions families were living in. Homes were tents that had rips in them and people were forgotten about. The non-profit business started with 3 founders. They started a website that showed donors exactly what their investments were being used for. In 2015, they were accepted into Y-Combinator, which had a 1.5% acceptance rate. They were challenged to do 100 houses in 100 days, and went above and beyond with 113 homes. In four years, they build 3D house communities in El Salvador, Haiti, Bolivia, and Mexico. They built 16 transformative communities and impacted over 10,000 people. In 2017, they started creating 3D homes for families. By 2030, their goal is to house 1 million people, doing whatever it takes. This company is very innovative and is inspiring to see how many lives they are changing through technology, all around the world.

  1. I was blown away by the creativity in this business. I had never heard of 3D architecture before, and this opened my mind to the possibility of using technology for the benefit of those who need it the most. I believe in the mission of this business, and I think they are bound for success, physically and eternally. The amount of homes they are able to provide for people is incredible.

  2. When I first heard of this non-profit, I immediately thought of John 14. Christ speaks of building us homes in the Kingdom of God as we wait until he calls us home. What a beautiful, redemptive, Christ-centered picture on earth what Christ is currently doing for us in heaven. I love the message and motivation behind this organization. It is amazing to see how God continues to inspire creativity in the hearts and minds of those made in his image.

  3. This is such an amazing idea that is already going to continue making a great impact! This innovation is a game-changer for battling homelessness and the struggle of the cost of living. I am excited to see this company’s continued development and I hope to see this technology everywhere housing is needed!
