The Light of Life Rescue Mission is a nonprofit organization, and it is the definition of a redemptive organization. Their mission statement is: As a ministry of Jesus Christ, Light of Life will provide a home for the homeless and food for the hungry, and will build disciples for the Kingdom of God among the poor, addicted, abused, and needy. This nonprofit not only meets the immediate needs of the people they come in contact with, but it also empowers, trains, and equips them to change their lives. They give people the opportunity to have a second chance, both physically and spiritually.
As a non-profit, they rely a lot on the help of others, and they have created many different ways for people to get involved with their ministry. First, they give people the opportunity to partner with them through online donations. Secondly, they have multiple volunteer options including serving meals and working in “life groups”. These opportunities give the whole community the opportunity to get involved in changing the lives of those in need.
The most amazing thing about this organization is how practically they put redemption into play in the lives of the people they serve. They offer a variety of programs to give hurting people places to heal, to equip people for jobs, and to help people find permanent, stable homes. These programs are such as the Men’s Life Recovery program, the Women and Children’s program, the Housing and Employment program, the Mental Health program, and the Food and Emergency program. Each of these programs targets specific needs and teaches people how to overcome them.
Last year, Light of Life provided 250,000+ meals, 8,000 nights of shelter for homeless men, sheltered 155 people nightly, held 800 chapel services, and provided 1,300 Thanksgiving dinner baskets for people in need. And, this is happening right in our backyard. Now that is a redemptive impact!
What a great ministry. My mind immediately went to Matthew 25- this non-profit is an incredible reflection of that passage. And beyond that, it seems as though they have a little discipleship process going as well- awesome!
These people are doing so much! Pittsburgh is such a beautiful, yet needy city. What an awesome ministry -Thanks for sharing!
There can never be enough homeless outreach, so its great to hear of yet another company that is using the situations of others to both help them and exemplify God’s love.
